Nebraska Corn Checkoff Update

NCB Director Alan Tiemann to be featured on America’s Heartland:  Nebraska Corn Board farmer director Alan Tiemann will be featured on an upcoming America’s Heartland show discussing the aspects of his farming operation and also the outlets of his corn production.  Tiemann and his wife Lori first flew to Taiwan to do some filming at the Wei Mon Industry Co., a major outlet of PLA produced at the Natureworks plant in Blair, NE.  In addition, America’s Heartland plans to visit an ethanol plant and visit with UNL to film some of the additional outlets of Nebraska’s corn production.  The focus of the episode is on distillers grains and PLA resin.

Corn Producers Represented During Congressional Hearing in Omaha:  Tim Recker, president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association provided testimony before a congressional hearing that took place in Omaha to discuss biofuels.  Recker appeared on behalf of the Nebraska Corn Board, Nebraska Corn Growers Association, National Corn Growers Association and Iowa Corn Growers Association.  Recker highlighted the efforts of corn growers to diversify their demand and the economic stimulation that the ethanol industry has brought to corn farmers and rural Nebraskans.  Don Hutchens, executive director of the Nebraska Corn Board was also present.  

NCB Elects 2008-2009 Officers:  The Nebraska Corn Board re-elected Jon Holzfaster, farmer director from Paxton, NE, as chairman for the board for the fiscal year 2008-2009 term.  Dennis Gengenbach, farmer director from Smithfield was elected vice-chairman and re-elected as Secretary / Treasurer was Alan Tiemann, farmer director from Seward.  All three officers, along with past chairman Mark Jagels will serve on the Executive Committee.  

NCB Responds to Dow Chemical CEO’s Comments:  In a letter to Dow Agro CEO Jerome Peribere, NCB chairman Jon Holzfaster and executive director Don Hutchens responded to comments that were in a recent article in which Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris labeled ethanol as “one of the dumbest ideas of all time”.  In the response letter Holzfaster and Hutchens said the comments where very disrespectful to the very producers that are Dow Agro’s customers.  The letter goes on to explain that as corn producers, we expect a thorough explanation of the comments and expect more from a CEO.

NCB Displays Kernels of Truth at State Fair:  The Nebraska Corn Board utilized their booth in Ag Hall during the Nebraska State Fair to highlight the Kernels of Truth figures on many of the common retail products that contain corn.  The interactive display allows consumers to know the true value of corn within these retail products and showcases how much of the retail dollar is actually traced back to the producer.  The display will also be shown during the upcoming Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island.  
 
NCB Hosts Distillers Grains Tour:  The Nebraska Corn Board hosted counterparts of the Iowa and Missouri Corn checkoff boards along with representatives of the Missouri Cattlemen and Missouri Department of Agriculture to tour various usages of distillers grains in cow/calf, feedlot, poultry and swine operations.  The group also met with Union Pacific and representatives of UNL.  This venture was the continuation of collaborative tours and projects amongst corn producer associations.  

NCB Presents Historical Photo to Advanced BioEnergy:  NCB executive director Don Hutchens presented the historical photo of the Earl Coryell fueling station that was the first ethanol blended fuel station in the US to the board of directors of Advanced BioEnergy during the recent meeting of stockholders and guests at their Fairmont, NE plant.
