NEBRASKA CORN CHECKOFF UPDATE

Renewable Fuels Proclamation Signed:  Governor Dave Heinemann designated September as Renewable Fuels Awareness month during a proclamation signing at Husker Harvest Days.  In cooperation with the Nebraska Soybean Board, the proclamation is a reminder that ethanol and biodiesel help to reduce this country's dependence on foreign oil, and that the biofuels industry has brought millions of dollars to mostly rural Nebraska communities.  Joining the Governor during the ceremony was Nebraska Corn Board chairman Jon Holzfaster and Nebraska Soybean Board chairman Gregg Fujan.

NCB Hosts Albanian Cochran Foundation Participants:  Nebraska Corn Board executive director Don Hutchens hosted four Albanians who are visiting Nebraska on Cochran Foundation scholarships.  Their meeting centered on a discussion of research and extension partnerships with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Additional discussion included Nebraska’s corn crop, livestock and ethanol industries.

September Production Report Estimates Lower:  The National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) released their updated estimates on crop production, with lower figures for yield and production than the previous August report.  For Nebraska, NASS lowered the yield to 157 bushels / acre, down from the August report of 163, with a production of 1.374 billion bushels.  If realized, this would be the second largest corn production behind last year’s 1.472 billion bushels.  NASS also lowered yield and production on the national level to 152 bushels / acres with an estimated production of 12.072 billion bushels.

UNL Extension Launches Profit Tips:  With Nebraska’s cattle producers being challenged by higher input prices of fuel, land, fertilizer and feed, UNL Extension has launched Profit Tips.  The initiative's full title, “Surviving High Input Costs” targets cow-calf and feedlot producers with weekly tips on topics such as forage, ethanol co-products, storage and bunk management to name a few.  Drs. Rick Rasby and Judson Vasconcelos are leading the initiative.  Profit Tips can be found on UNL’s Extension Beef website, http://beef.unl.edu.

Dickey to Assume Reins of NCGA:  On October 1, Nebraska Corn Board member Bob Dickey of Laurel, NE will become the president of the nearly 34,000 member National Corn Growers Association.  Dickey will take over the presidency from Iowa farmer Ron Litterer who has guided the NCGA through many victories, including the passage of the Water Resources Development Act, Farm Bill and a new Renewable Fuels Standard.  Dickey, a former Nebraska state senator, owns and operates a grain and livestock operation in northeast Nebraska.

NCB Launches Nebraska Corn Kernels Blog:  The Nebraska Corn Board recently launched their new blog site, Nebraska Corn Kernels.  The blog will highlight issues and topics that have an association to corn, ethanol or livestock.  Producers and consumers are encouraged to read and comment on any of the stories.  Nebraska Corn Kernels can be found at http://nebraskacorn.blogspot.com/.

NCB Participates in Asia Mission:  Nebraska Corn Board member Dave Nielsen attended a mission to Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan to better assess market conditions for developing the local feed industries.  The mission, arranged by the US Grains Council included participants from Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Arkansas.  One of the tour stops was a large PLA importer that is sourcing their product from the Natureworks LLC plant in Blair, NE.
