Corn Checkoff Monthly Update

September is Renewable Fuels Month:  With Governor Dave Heinemann signing the proclamation, September was declared Renewable Fuels Month in Nebraska.  The proclamation was signed by Governor Heinemann during an press conference at Husker Harvest Days at the request of the Nebraska Corn Board (NCB) and Nebraska Soybean Board.  The proclamation recognizes the contributions of Nebraska farmers and agribusiness to the nation’s biofuel industry.

NCB Hosts Japanese Media Team:  The Nebraska Corn Board (NCB) hosted a team of Japanese media while they spent time across Nebraska.  The team, sponsored by the US Grains Council, was learning about the benefits of biotechnology use during tours of Darr Feedlot, Monsanto’s Water Utilization Learning Center, Advanced BioEnergy, Bunge Milling and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  The group was also provided a farm site visit and evening BBQ hosted by NCB Chairman Alan and Lori Tiemann.

NCB Submits Comments on RFS-2 Regulations:  The Nebraska Corn Board took the opportunity during the recent public comment period to submit concerns on EPA’s proposed regulations that will govern the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS-2).  Among the concerns outlined were 1) lack of full credit for distillers grains, 2) inclusion of international land use change, 3) lack of transparency in the models and 4) lack of proper protocol in peer reviews.

NCB Reminds Safety First During Harvest Season:  The Nebraska Corn Board is again encouraging producers and motorists to be safe during the harvest season.  The harvest season increases the amount of traffic and slower moving implements on the roads, and also the usage of augers, power take offs and other potential hazards producers need to be cautious around.

NASS Releases Updated Corn Crop Production, Estimates Record Production and Yield:  In an updated crop production report released by the National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) on September 11th, Nebraska’s corn crop is now estimated to be a record 1.55 billion bushels.  This is projected in part by a record yield of 169 bushels per acre.  Nationally, NASS estimated corn production at 13.0 billion bushels on a record yield of 161.9 bushels per acre.
